Interpretation

Rubén González at the piano is something close to elemental force, and this descarga — a jazz-inflected Cuban jam — demonstrates exactly why. The piece opens almost without warning, the piano tumbling forward in cascading montuno figures that seem to generate their own momentum, the rhythm section locking into a clave pattern that becomes the entire world for the duration of the track. González plays with a percussive attack that treats the piano partly as a rhythm instrument, the left hand laying down a harmonic-rhythmic foundation while the right improvises with a looseness that sounds spontaneous but reflects decades of internalized structure. The horns — or whatever brass enters — arrive like punctuation rather than melody, adding exclamatory emphasis to the piano's ongoing conversation. There is tremendous joy in this music, a physical, kinetic joy that bypasses the analytical mind entirely and speaks directly to whatever part of the body wants to move. González recorded this relatively late in life, rediscovered by the Buena Vista project, and that late-career energy is palpable — someone playing with nothing held back because there is no longer any reason to hold back. This belongs at high volume, in a space where movement is possible, though it rewards close listening too: the internal logic of the improvisation reveals itself on repeated plays.
