Los Muñequitos de Matanzas are the living archive of Afro-Cuban sacred and secular percussion traditions, and a recording of their guaguancó is not entertainment so much as a ritual document. The sound is stripped to its essentials — conga drums, a palito wooden stick pattern, voices — and in that reduction lies everything. The guaguancó is one of the three forms of rumba, originating in the port neighborhoods of Matanzas and Havana in the late nineteenth century, and it carries the mark of that origins in every measure: communal, syncretic, rooted in the African traditions that survived the brutality of the Middle Passage and took new form on Caribbean soil. The lead singer improvises in a style called the diana, a vocal introduction that establishes the mood before the coro locks in, and the interplay between them is both musical and philosophical — individual voice in conversation with collective voice, neither swallowing the other.
