Pablo Moses In a Far East
Augustus Pablo
The melodica should not work the way Augustus Pablo makes it work. It is a child's instrument, a classroom novelty, and yet in Pablo's hands it becomes something genuinely transcendent — mournful and searching in a register that sits just above the human voice, close enough to feel intimate but strange enough to feel visionary. This track layers that melodica over a riddim that incorporates Eastern melodic scales, building a sonic bridge between Jamaica and a generalized imagined East that feels less like appropriation than like genuine longing for connection across distance. The production by King Tubby and associates gives the bass a particular warm roundness, the drums sitting back in the mix while the melodica pushes forward as the focal point. Echo is used sparingly here compared to more aggressive dub productions — Pablo's melodic lines are allowed to breathe and be heard, the reverb merely giving them a slight halo. The emotional character is nostalgic and philosophical, the feeling of someone far from home meditating on distance itself. This belongs to the deep-roots dub tradition of the mid-1970s, a period when Jamaican producers were expanding their harmonic vocabulary in unexpected directions. It is early-morning music, or late-night music — music for the threshold hours when the mind moves freely between places and times.
