The opening seconds of "Headhunter" are a trap — a sparse, clean electronic pulse that seems almost restrained before the full architecture descends and locks into place with the inevitability of a curfew announcement. Front 242 built the definitive EBM statement here: a four-on-the-floor kick drum that doesn't accent rhythm so much as enforce it, a bassline that functions less as melody than as pressure applied to the sternum, and a call-and-response vocal structure that borrows from military cadence and propaganda broadcast in equal measure. Jean-Luc De Meyer's delivery is precise and affectless in the verses, the words delivered like inventory being counted rather than a story being told, which makes the chorus land with unsettling force. The subject is the hunt — the machinery of surveillance and pursuit reduced to pure procedural logic, emotion stripped out, the process glorified by its own efficiency. Sonically this is Belgium 1988 at its most refined: the Brusselian cold wave origins sublimated entirely into something harder and more functional. The track belongs to fluorescent-lit warehouse spaces, to a certain kind of relentless forward motion through a crowd. Decades on it still sounds like a system that has already decided.
