"Revolve" is the most hypnotic and possibly the strangest thing Melvins committed to a major-label record. It does not build so much as rotate — the title is genuinely descriptive of the song's structural logic, which is circular, mantra-like, a repeating figure that accumulates meaning through sheer duration rather than development. The guitar lines have a drone quality borrowed more from minimalist composition or krautrock than from metal proper, and Crover's drumming locks into a motorik patience that is almost meditative. There is an industrial coldness to the production on Stag, a sense of deliberate alienation that distances this from anything warm or organic. Osborne's vocals are sparse, almost incidental, entering and exiting without announcing themselves as emotional focal points.
