Begin Again
Purity Ring
Where much of Purity Ring's work sits in shadows, "Begin Again" introduces a thread of cautious, luminous hope without abandoning the project's characteristic eeriness. Roddick's production here feels more spacious — synth pads open wide and breathe, giving James's voice room to expand rather than cocooning it. The beat carries a gentle forward momentum, almost like a walking pace, purposeful without urgency. There's a quality of morning light about it, early and still uncertain, the kind of light that promises warmth but hasn't delivered it yet. James sings with unusual directness here, her tone less spectral than on many Purity Ring tracks, more grounded and present, though still carrying that signature quality of someone speaking just slightly outside of ordinary human register. The song circles the idea of reinvention and departure, the emotional labor of deciding to move forward rather than remain in stasis. It's a song that a person might play at the actual beginning of something — a new city, a new chapter — not as celebration but as quiet self-permission, standing at a threshold and finally letting themselves step through.
