Bulbform
TR/ST
Robert Alfons builds his music from absences as much as presences — the spaces between synthesizer notes, the reverb that suggests enormous empty rooms, the bass frequencies that arrive like weather changing. This track is a study in atmosphere as architecture: cold, ecclesiastical, with a production that places the listener inside something that has the dimensions of a cathedral and the warmth of a freezer. His baritone is the central instrument, and it carries a quality of self-containment that never quite tips into emotion, hovering instead at the edge of feeling without spilling over. The lyrics describe interiority turned against itself — desire as something systematic, love as a process of categorization and loss. Synthetically, the track draws on the darkwave tradition that runs from early Depeche Mode through the bleaker corners of post-punk, but Alfons strips the genre of any residual warmth, producing something cleaner and more abstract. TR/ST emerged from Toronto's electronic underground as a project that seemed genuinely uninterested in accessibility, making music that rewards patience and penalizes distracted listening. This is sound for late autumn, for cities seen through fogged windows, for the particular mood that arrives when solitude has been sustained long enough to become its own kind of landscape. Play it when you want the external world to match an internal state that cannot quite be articulated.
