Witch
Sidewalks and Skeletons
Sidewalks and Skeletons' "Witch" operates entirely in the register of ritual — it does not build toward anything so much as summon it, the track arriving already in progress as though you've stumbled into the middle of something ancient and private. The production is deliberately degraded, a heavy crunch of distortion applied to every layer so that the source material becomes partially illegible, spectral female vocal samples dissolving at the edges into texture rather than melody. The kick drum is enormous and unhurried, landing with the dull thud of something buried, while shimmerng ambient pads fill the upper frequencies with a haze that reads less like atmosphere than like smoke. There is no conventional song structure here — no verse-chorus architecture — just a hypnotic forward movement that feels closer to incantation than composition. The emotional landscape is one of transgression and invocation, of power accessed through methods that exist outside sanctioned frameworks. It belongs to the witch house moment of the early 2010s, when producers were using visual and sonic distortion as a kind of occult aesthetics — obscuring meaning as a way of amplifying feeling. Play this alone after midnight with the lights very low, when you want music that does not ask anything of you except your presence.
