Gaga's vocal here is one of her most controlled performances: she does not oversell any moment, which makes the whole thing more unsettling, not less. The song operates in the space between invitation and threat, asking its subject — or perhaps the listener — to drop every mask and be seen fully. There is a fetishistic quality to the demand, but it is psychological rather than merely physical: the teeth of the title suggest something about showing the animal underneath the social performance. In the landscape of pop that surrounded it, the track was genuinely strange — it has no obvious hook to soften the experience. You listen to it when you want to feel the edges of something, when the polished surface of most music feels dishonest.
