There is an urgency that precedes this song — you feel the pressure before the first note fully resolves. The Murder Capital write music that understands mortality not as abstraction but as immediate weight, and the title is both instruction and provocation, demanding that you loosen your grip on whatever you've been holding too tightly. McGovern's vocal delivery here is among his most physically committed: he pushes into phrases rather than singing over them, his voice carrying the roughness of something said under duress. The band underneath him builds with deliberate intent — guitar lines that interlock and grind against each other, the rhythm section operating with a kind of mechanized urgency that never tips into aggression but maintains sustained pressure. The emotional register is genuinely difficult to place: it is not nihilism, because nihilism is comfortable and this is not comfortable, but it's also not despair exactly — it's closer to the feeling of being shaken awake, of someone refusing to let you sleepwalk through your own disappearance. The production is dense, layered, the kind of sonic environment that fills the room rather than playing in it. This came out in 2019 on their debut "When I Have Fears," a record written in the shadow of a friend's suicide, which gives all of its songs a specificity of grief that elevates them beyond post-punk exercise.
