Interpretation

Elastica built a career on economy as philosophy, and this track is the theorem made flesh. The guitars arrive like a door kicked open — terse, angular, absolutely no decorative fat anywhere on the arrangement. Justine Frischmann delivers the vocal with a studied boredom that is itself a kind of cool, conversational and slightly contemptuous, as if the song is being addressed to someone who should already know this. The Wire influence is worn openly, the post-punk compression of energy into the smallest possible space, but Elastica were never simply revivalists — there's a specifically mid-90s London cattiness in the lyrical sensibility, a social observation that lands like a well-aimed remark at a party. The rhythm is relentless without being punishing, the kind of tempo that makes your foot move before you've decided to let it. Emotionally the song sits in a register of sharp, ironic appraisal — it's music that watches rather than emotes, and that surveillance quality gives it an odd intimacy. You'd play this when getting ready, when you want something that has opinions, or in a car through a city at a pace that matches its clipped insistence.
