The original is a piece of deliberately cheerful Elton John theater, all bounce and camp affection. In Teddy Swims's hands it becomes something stranger and more interesting — the joy is still present, but it's been passed through a soul filter that gives the playfulness a depth the original never quite had. His voice, built for weight and texture, finds something unexpected in the lightness: a warmth that feels genuine rather than performed, a looseness that suggests he's enjoying the joke of applying this much instrument to this much shimmer. The production keeps the buoyancy — crisp rhythm, bright harmonic palette, a tempo that moves with purpose — but the vocal choices introduce small moments of genuine feeling into what was always primarily a novelty. The call-and-response structure of the original gets reimagined as a conversation between different registers of his own voice, which creates an intimacy the duet format originally relied on two people to generate. What emerges is a song that works simultaneously as something you can dance to and something that, if you listen carefully, has real affection running underneath the performance.
