"Heather" is a bedroom-recording aesthetic taken to its logical conclusion: a single fingerpicked acoustic guitar, a faint string pad that arrives like fog, and almost no percussion at all until the very end, when a soft swell lifts the last chorus and then disappears again. Conan Gray's voice is thin and high and unashamedly fragile, close enough to the mic that you can hear the room and the breath, and he lets it break rather than correcting it — the performance depends on sounding like a diary entry someone found rather than a produced vocal. The lyric works through the most exquisitely specific detail: the sweater given away, the December birthday, the wish to be someone else entirely.
