Billy Strings brings his flatpicking guitar to this Grateful Dead chestnut and immediately reframes it as a piece of American string-band tradition rather than a piece of psychedelic folk history. The tempo is brisk and unforgiving, driven by his right-hand attack — precise, muscular, with a tone that has the bark of old wood rather than the shine of studio polish. The story itself is a Western: a narrator traveling with his uncle, a card game in a cowboy town, violence and aftermath and the particular loneliness of a man who survives what he witnesses. What Strings does with the song is strip away any ambiguity about its roots — this is mountain music meeting the outlaw ballad tradition, and the instrumentation responds accordingly, fiddle or mandolin weaving around his lead lines in the tight conversational way of traditional bluegrass.
