Poseidon

Deeper and more oceanic than its companion pieces in the mythological series, "Poseidon" opens with what sounds like pressure — a slow harmonic drone that suggests depth rather than height, the sonic equivalent of water closing over you. Where "Zeus" communicates vertical dominance, this track is horizontal and enveloping, its energy spreading outward rather than pressing down. The production texture is remarkably liquid: synthesizer layers breathe and undulate with a fluidity that's unusual for techno, which tends toward the rigid and mechanical. Percussion is present but submerged, the kick drum arriving through layers of reverb and modulation as if heard from underwater. The track's emotional effect is disorientation without panic — a surrendering to something vast, the way ocean swimmers describe going beyond the break, where the current becomes something you move with rather than against. A high, thin melodic element appears intermittently, like light at a shifting depth, always briefly before sinking back into the arrangement. There's genuine menace here, but it's natural menace — the indifference of scale rather than any hostile intent. HI-LO and Heldens have made something genuinely strange: a techno track that doesn't drive or pulse so much as immerse. Reach for it at the end of a long night, when the body is tired and the mind has dissolved enough to stop cataloguing the sounds and simply move inside them.
