Lee Hi's "한숨" ("Breathe") is a piano ballad written by SHINee's Jonghyun, and it has been inseparable from grief since his death the following year — but the song was already about staying alive when it was released on 2016's Seoulite. It is built almost entirely on a slow, unhurried piano figure, with strings and a low synth pad entering only to widen the space rather than to lift it. There is no drop, no key-change catharsis, no percussion until very late. Lee Hi's voice is the record's whole instrument: a smoky, unusually low alto for K-pop, husky in the lower register and slightly frayed at the top, singing with the deliberate restraint of someone speaking to a person who might break. The lyric does something quietly radical — it does not tell the listener to cheer up or endure. It says that even a sigh is fine, that exhaling is permitted, that no one has to explain why they are tired. "Let out all your sighs, I will listen." That absence of advice is why the song has become a fixture of Korean playlists about depression and exhaustion. Best heard alone late at night when you cannot articulate what is wrong and do not want to be asked.
