David Bowie recorded "Lazarus" while dying, and that knowledge is impossible to separate from the experience of hearing it — but what's remarkable is that the song doesn't need that biography to be devastating. The saxophone that opens it is raw and slightly atonal, the kind of playing that sounds like someone working something out rather than performing. The production is spare and modern, with ambient guitar textures drifting beneath the rhythm, suggesting a room where the lights have been turned very low. Bowie's voice is unmistakably aged — the timbre is deeper, worn at certain edges — but the control is total, and he deploys it with the precision of someone who has been singing for fifty years and knows exactly what each note costs.
