Interpretation

What makes this song so disorienting — and so honest — is that it sounds like two people talking past each other while desperately wanting to be understood. Charli XCX's hyperpop instincts are dialed back into something more vulnerable here, the production shimmering and synthetic but leaving unusual amounts of space, almost uncomfortable amounts, as if the beat itself isn't sure how to proceed. Lorde's addition transforms it entirely: her voice arrives like a cold front, deeper in tone and more plainspoken, and suddenly the song becomes a dialogue between two public women who have spent years being compared to each other by an audience that never asked them. The lyrical tension is about the peculiar vertigo of simultaneous admiration and resentment — the way you can love someone and feel diminished by them and not know how to separate those feelings. There's something generationally specific here about women in the public eye negotiating their relationships with other women under constant external scrutiny. The production's metallic shimmer never fully resolves; it stays suspended, which is exactly right emotionally. Listen to this alone at 2 a.m. when you're untangling something complicated about a friendship that makes you feel both seen and invisible.
