Timeless (with Playboi Carti)
The Weeknd
The Weeknd has made a career of making luxury feel haunted, and this collaboration with Playboi Carti takes that aesthetic to its most crystalline extreme. The production is glacial — wide, reverb-drenched synth pads that feel less like a backdrop and more like a climate, cold and pressurized and slightly airless. Abel's falsetto hovers at the very edge of human warmth, beautiful but self-consciously so, the vocal equivalent of a face caught in a museum spotlight. Carti's contribution is almost antiphonal, his delivery splintered and frenetic against the slowness around him, creating friction that the track needs: without it the song might dissolve into pure atmosphere. Thematically it circulates around a relationship preserved in amber — not alive, not dead, but suspended in a state the narrator keeps returning to regardless of cost. Culturally this lives at the apex of a particular post-2020 maximalist R&B moment where genre boundaries dissolved and arena ambition merged with underground experimentalism. The emotional register is yearning distilled until it loses sentimentality entirely, leaving only a kind of majestic ache. This is the song you play in a car at 3 a.m. through a city that looks better at night than it deserves to.
