Static
Ari Lennox
Ari Lennox has one of the most idiosyncratic voices in contemporary R&B — elastic, playful, rooted in classic soul phrasing but too personal to be described simply as neo-soul — and "Static" showcases all of that without apology. The production leans into a warm, slightly retro aesthetic with live-feeling drums and bass that have genuine pocket, the kind of groove that feels inhabited rather than assembled. There is Stevie Wonder's influence somewhere in the harmonic language, and traces of Minnie Riperton in how she uses her upper register — light and pure and unexpected when it appears. But Lennox is entirely herself, which means playful ornamentation that veers close to eccentric, runs and turns that feel improvised even when they probably are not, and a conversational quality to her phrasing that makes the song feel like a very good story being told in real time. The lyrical content circles romantic frustration with a specificity that is almost comic — the kind of detailed complaint that is only possible when you genuinely care. The mood is not dark despite the subject; there is too much personality in the delivery for anything to stay heavy. This is music for getting ready to go out, for driving with the windows down, for moments when you want to feel both seen in your mess and buoyant enough to move through it.
