Moments of Clarity
Narrow Head
Narrow Head understand something that a lot of bands operating in the shoegaze-grunge overlap forget: that the point was never the noise itself, but what the noise contains. This track moves with the loose-limbed heaviness of early nineties alternative — not as pastiche, but as genuine inheritance, the sound absorbed so deeply that it comes back out transformed. The guitars are enormous, tuned down and run through layers of distortion and reverb that turn individual chords into whole atmospheres, but underneath the density there's a melody with real pull, the kind that hooks before you've consciously noticed it. The drums feel live and uncompressed, hitting with the physical weight of a room recording rather than studio perfection. Vocally, the delivery sits in a laconic middle distance — not shouted, not whispered, but pitched at the register of someone working something out as they go. The lyrics circle around the title's promise: those rare instants of sudden coherence when the static clears and something becomes visible that was previously obscured by noise, internal or external. The song understands that such moments are temporary, which gives them their particular poignancy. This is music for humid Southern evenings, for cities with bad traffic and good record stores, for the specific combination of physical and emotional heaviness that the Houston scene has made its own. It belongs to a generation that learned from Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine and then found something new to say inside those inherited forms.
