Kenny Segal builds the bed from a piano figure that sounds like it's been left out in the rain — slightly warped, slightly beautiful — over which Billy Woods enters not so much with verses as with dispatches from somewhere distant. The production is deceptively loose, stitched from jazz fragments and ambient breath, carrying the drowsy geography of long transit. Woods' voice is one of rap's most distinctive instruments: gruff and unhurried, carrying the texture of someone who has seen enough to stop being surprised. The lyrical architecture here is elliptical — scenes appear and dissolve without resolution, connected more by emotional logic than narrative through-line. There is a quality of reportage, as if Woods is sending notes from an assignment he never agreed to take. Themes of estrangement and transience run through the track without being announced; the listener feels them accumulating in the spaces between lines. Segal's arrangements on this album consistently resist easy categorization, and here the beat seems to shift in subtle register changes that mirror the emotional texture of the writing. This is a record for train windows and unfamiliar cities, for the particular alertness of being somewhere you don't belong and finding that strangely clarifying.
