G.E.M.'s version of this Beyond classic does something counterintuitive: it refuses to compete with the original on emotional scale, instead finding a completely different emotional register that makes the song newly vulnerable. Where the 1989 recording carries the roughness of a rock band catching lightning in a bottle, her arrangement is stripped and intimate — acoustic guitar, careful percussion, a production philosophy that seems to ask what remains of a song when you remove everything protective. Her voice here operates without armor. The phrasing is slower than necessary, each line given room to breathe and land, and the result is that words which have been heard thousands of times feel newly specific, as if addressed to a single person rather than broadcast to an audience.
