Ricochet

Preoccupations construct "Ricochet" as a closed system — sound entering at one point and bouncing endlessly off interior walls until you can't trace where it originated. The guitars produce a kind of motorik shimmer, krautrock influence absorbed and metabolized into something colder and more claustrophobic. Matt Flegel's bass provides the gravitational center while the guitars orbit in increasingly elliptical paths. The production is deliberately cavernous, reverb used not as atmosphere but as architecture, creating a space that seems to expand and contract with the emotional pressure of the song. Flegel's vocals are hushed, almost reluctant, delivered with the quality of someone speaking in a room they suspect is being monitored. The lyrical territory is anxiety rendered as physical sensation — thoughts that won't resolve, the mental equivalent of a ball bearing that can't come to rest. The mood never breaks into catharsis; it maintains a precise level of tension, which is itself the emotional statement. This belongs to the post-punk tradition that treats discomfort as an honest artistic position rather than something to move past. You'd reach for it during an insomniac stretch at two in the morning, or on a train ride through unfamiliar landscape, when the mind is generating feedback it can't identify the source of.
