Big Mouth Parade

Sinead O'Brien's "Big Mouth Parade" exists at the intersection of spoken word and post-punk without fully committing to either, which is exactly where its power lives. The musical bed is sparse and angular — guitar and rhythm that recall the art-punk of early Siouxsie or the Raincoats, but stripped further, held at a tension that never quite resolves. The song has the quality of a manifesto delivered sideways, where the form enacts the argument. It belongs to the lineage of post-punk women who understood language as a physical material: Mark E. Smith's intensity combined with something more fluid and body-conscious. You reach for this in the afternoon when you're tired of discourse that circles without landing, and you want something that arrives in the room and takes up actual space.
