"Lex" is Yussef Dayes playing drums as if the kit were a landscape rather than a timekeeper. Dayes came up through Yussef Kamaal and the South London scene where jazz, broken beat, and West African rhythm stopped being separate rooms, and this track is that lineage compressed: a groove that breathes and stumbles and recovers, hi-hats scattering like rain on a roof, a snare placed slightly off where you expect, so your body keeps recalibrating. It's largely instrumental, which means the emotional information is all in touch — the way he plays quietly, letting the ghost notes carry more feeling than any crash could. There's warmth in the recording itself, room tone and cymbal decay left in, nothing gridded. The mood is unhurried, humid, a little melancholy without ever announcing sadness. Around it, keys and bass hold long, patient shapes, giving the drums permission to be the melody. Dayes's project has always been about the drummer as author, and this is a good argument for it. It works as headphones-close study music where the shifting rhythm keeps your mind awake, or on a warm evening with the windows open and nothing scheduled.
