Theatre Brook's "Uragiri no Yuuyake" — "Sunset of Betrayal" — erupts with a fuzzy bass riff and funk-rock groove that immediately marks it as something different from typical anime fare. The production is warm and analog-feeling, guitars overdriven with tube-amp character, drums recorded with room ambiance that gives them physical dimension. The vocal delivery carries a streetwise cool that bridges Japanese rock tradition with Western funk and soul influences. The Japanese lyrics deal with deception and disillusionment, but the groove is so infectious that betrayal becomes something you can dance to — which is perhaps the point. As a Durarara!! opening, it perfectly captured the show's chaotic urban energy, but the track stands entirely on its own merits as a piece of funk-rock craftsmanship. The guitar work is particularly notable — sliding between clean funk stabs and distorted rock passages with fluid ease. There's a swagger to the performance that's rare in Japanese rock, a confidence that comes from musicians who understand groove at a cellular level.
