Alexander Robotnick's "Problèmes d'Amour" from 1983 is one of electronic music's perfect objects — a track so precisely calibrated in its balance of warmth and coolness, simplicity and sophistication, that it has aged without any apparent deterioration. Maurizio Dami's production strips the dancefloor formula to its most effective elements: a minimal drum machine pattern, a melodic synthesizer figure of disarming simplicity, and a French-language vocal that imports Parisian sophistication into Florentine electronic music. The French lyrics discussing love problems give the track a literary quality that distinguishes it from more straightforwardly pleasurable Italo productions — here the dancefloor becomes a venue for intellectual as well as physical engagement. The arrangement's sparseness is architectural in its intelligence, each element occupying its frequency space without competition. The bassline arrives not as weight but as warmth, the harmony suggesting early house music that wouldn't exist for another few years.
