Goldberg Variations: Aria (2020 recording)
Lang Lang
Lang Lang's 2020 recording of the Goldberg Aria, part of his landmark double album presenting both the 1981 Gould and a new interpretation, is notable for its warmth and patience. Where his early career was defined by speed and drama, this Aria demonstrates a pianist listening more than performing: the tempo is unhurried, the touch almost tentative at times, as if approaching something sacred. The ornaments are tasteful and integrated rather than decorative, and the left hand's walking bass is given genuine melodic character — this is a full conversation between voices, not accompaniment and melody. The recording benefits from exceptional microphone placement, capturing the body of the instrument as well as its attack. Lang Lang has spoken of this recording as deeply personal, made during a period of physical injury and recovery, and that context is audible in the playing's particular tenderness. A more emotionally open interpretation than Ólafsson's architectural reading — both valid, neither definitive.
