"Right in Two" is Tool's most explicitly philosophical piece — a meditation on human nature as fundamentally divided, inspired by the biblical account of angels watching humanity squander the gift of consciousness through tribalism and violence. The song builds with characteristic Tool patience: a long opening section of clean guitar and sparse, almost ambient production before Carey's drums enter and the full band gradually assembles into something enormous. Maynard's vocals move from near-whisper to full intensity as the narrative escalates from cosmic observation to specific human tragedy. The lyrical framing — angels looking down in bewilderment at a species with infinite potential destroying itself over scarcity — achieves its impact through the quality of questioning rather than certainty of accusation. The arrangement's final section, where drums grow increasingly dense and tempo compresses, mirrors the exhaustion and grief of the perspective it inhabits. Best heard at the end of "10,000 Days," where its philosophical weight lands within a larger context of grief, memory, and spiritual reckoning.
