"홈타운 (Hometown)" finds Silica Gel in retrospective mode, the typically disorienting production made warmer and more textural in service of the subject matter. Hometown as concept in Korean indie carries particular weight — the rapid urbanization that remade Korean geography over a single generation created a generation of people for whom home is simultaneously present memory and transformed beyond recognition. The sonic approach uses familiar psychedelic textures but arranges them around something more melodically central than their more abstract work, as if the remembered warmth of a childhood place has softened even the band's characteristic abrasion. There are guitar passages that function almost as lullabies before being overtaken by the band's more expansive sonic instincts — nostalgia contaminated by the knowledge that you can't fully return.
