Trip II the Moon

Acen's "Trip II the Moon" is perhaps the finest single document of UK hardcore rave at its aesthetic peak — a 1992 release that somehow manages to be simultaneously ferocious and beautiful, the sonic equivalent of a hallucination that has found its own internal logic. The production stacks samples with a collage sensibility that owes something to hip-hop and nothing to caution: a vocal hook pitched up into near-unrecognizable registers, breakbeats chopped and reassembled at speed, a piano riff that appears like a shaft of light through industrial machinery. Acen was working within the north London hardcore scene but producing something that sounds sui generis even thirty years later — the specific gravity of "Trip II the Moon" comes from its emotional range, which moves from euphoria to melancholy to aggression within a single bar. The bassweight is enormous, the atmosphere somehow nostalgic despite having no precedent to be nostalgic for. Culturally, it represents a generation of largely Black and Brown British youth creating sonic culture of genuine originality from limited equipment and maximum imagination. It is best experienced loud, in the dark, at a moment when the distance between where you are and where you want to be has temporarily dissolved.
