Searchin' for My Rizla

Ratpack's "Searchin' for My Rizla" wears its humor as openly as any track in the hardcore canon, the title's rolling-paper reference establishing immediately that this was music comfortable with its own pleasures, uninterested in the dark-side aesthetic developing simultaneously. The production is accordingly bright — the breaks have a different character than contemporaries reaching toward menace, something in the snare processing that keeps the track dancing rather than marching. Pianos appear in the arrangement, another marker of the strand of early nineties rave that maintained its connection to house music's emotional vocabulary rather than severing it for harder territory. The track's knowing wit extends to its construction: elements arrive and are deployed with the timing of comedy, building expectations and subverting them, using the accumulated language of a year of rave music to make structural jokes that a crowd already immersed in that language would immediately register. There's a specific British working-class register here — irreverent, pleasure-forward, resistant to pretension — that connects this strand of music to a social tradition much longer than its few years of existence. The track doesn't ask to be taken seriously in the way darker contemporaries did, and that refusal is its own integrity. It captures the essential lightness of a room full of people determined to enjoy themselves whatever the cultural authorities made of the spectacle.
