Metallica
The title track from Metallica's 2023 album carries a concept — that the first twelve years of life permanently shape who we become — through muscular, mid-tempo riffing that owes something to their Black Album era but has a rawer, more weathered texture. Hetfield's voice has deepened into something genuinely haunted; he is no longer performing menace but excavating it from lived experience. The production by Greg Fidelman is dense without being oppressive, the guitars warm and massive, Ulrich's drums unusually organic. Lyrically, it circles guilt, formation, the parts of childhood that calcify into adulthood's problems. There is something therapeutic and terrible in equal measure — a man in his late fifties reckoning with the boy he was, through a medium that has never fully let him grow quieter. It rewards careful listening across a long drive through familiar, complicated territory.
