Bună Dimineața

Zdob și Zdub's "Bună Dimineața" (Good Morning) is one of the most genuinely joyful recordings in Eastern European folk-rock, a Moldovan band's declaration that happiness is a political act. The horn section announces itself immediately — not the jazz-inflected brass of Western pop but something more festive, more village-square, more likely to be heard from a truck driving through a Romanian-speaking town at harvest time. The rhythm is somewhere between polka and rock, a hybrid that shouldn't work but absolutely does, the kind of beat that makes bodily response involuntary. Vocalist Romani Iagupov has a delivery that's simultaneously sly and sincere, aware of the song's absurdist energy while committing to it completely. "Good Morning" functions as greeting, manifesto, and slight provocation — in the post-Soviet Moldovan context, insisting on joy is not innocent but charged. The lyrics are cheerfully uncomplicated but the music underneath them is sophisticated, the band's punk-folk background evident in the refusal to smooth off rough edges. This song works at weddings, at road trips, at 7am when you've decided to be optimistic despite evidence, and — crucially — while cooking something that requires dancing while stirring.
