Interpretation

Robert Rich's "Somnium" is one of the most radical experiments in the history of recorded music: a seven-hour continuous piece designed to be played while the audience sleeps, working on dream consciousness rather than waking attention. Rich performed the original as a live Sleep Concert in the 1980s, and the recorded version captures the same intent — sounds chosen not for waking aesthetic pleasure but for their effects on sleeping minds, on the hypnagogic states between waking and sleep. The production is extraordinarily sparse, individual sounds emerging from silence with long spaces between them, the harmonic movement occurring over timescales measured in hours rather than minutes. This is not music in any conventional structural sense — there are no themes, no development, no resolution — but it is deeply considered sound-making, every element chosen for its relationship to the sleeping body's sonic environment. The cultural tradition Rich draws from is obscure but real: research into dream incubation, the ritual use of sound in various contemplative traditions, the understanding that consciousness continues to process sonic information during sleep. The most honest listening scenario is therefore the intended one: headphones, darkness, the beginning of night, surrender.
