Interpretation

Steve Reich's "Drumming" is a ninety-minute percussion epic that unfolds in four continuous sections — two pairs of tuned bongo drums, then marimbas, then glockenspiels, then all three together with voices and piccolo. Composed between 1970 and 1971 following Reich's study of Ghanaian drumming at the University of Ghana, it applies his phase technique to the most fundamental of instruments: struck membranes and metal bars. The process is gradual and relentless: a single rhythmic pattern is built note by note from silence, then transferred between instruments and pitched upward, always maintaining that central pulse. The percussive sound world is warm and enveloping, the marimbas particularly producing a resonance that seems to vibrate in the chest. Female vocalists and male voice gradually join the instrumental texture, imitating the melodic patterns that emerge from the interlocking drums — auditory stream segregation creating melodies no single voice is singing. The cultural debt to African percussion traditions is explicit and acknowledged, though the application is distinctly Reich's own. Listening to "Drumming" in its entirety is a sustained commitment rewarded by the sense of having passed through something — not a narrative but a duration, a process completed.
