Kraftwerk reduced fashion and female objectification to its barest logical skeleton on "Das Model" — a cold, hypnotic synth-pop track from 1978 that remains more prescient with each passing decade. The sequencer patterns repeat with mechanical insistence, Ralf Hütter's voice flat and affectless, describing a model's public life with the detachment of a product catalog entry. There's no warmth, no romance, no redemption — just the pristine machinery of image and consumption cycling endlessly. The production is deceptively simple: a few synthesizer lines, a drum machine, a vocal that refuses to register emotion about the emotional content it describes.
