The guitars open with a figure that suggests rootedness — something planted, stable, connected to ground — before the rhythm section draws the whole structure into motion. Franco's vocal approach here sits in a register that suggests communal address, the elder speaking to gathered listeners rather than an individual, a quality that connects to the griot traditions anteceding the rumba era. TPOK Jazz's brass arrangements in this period balance the guitar-heavy core of the sound without overwhelming it, entering and receding like weather rather than dominating the sky. The production quality captured on these recordings, despite the limitations of Kinshasa's studio infrastructure relative to what was available in London or New York simultaneously, achieves a warmth and immediacy that no amount of technical sophistication has subsequently improved upon. Dancing to "Mabele" is to participate in something genuinely old — musical forms and social functions with roots running deeper than the recording era, the rumba synthesis having preserved something from the matrix of traditions that fed into it. It sounds as alive now as it did when recorded, which is not something that can be said of much popular music from any era.
