Aqua (Opus, 2023)

"Aqua" from Sakamoto's Opus concert is, as its title suggests, a meditation on water — on fluidity, on the way material can change state while remaining essentially itself. Sakamoto's relationship with water as compositional subject runs throughout his career: his collaborations with filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, his score for The Revenant, his long-standing ambient work that uses environmental sound including water. The piano writing in "Aqua" suggests liquid motion without mimicking it — the left hand's patterns maintaining fluid movement while the right hand's melodic gestures float above like objects carried by current. His touch in the Opus recording is supremely controlled yet emotionally transparent, each note given precisely its due weight and duration before releasing it. The piece demonstrates Sakamoto's synthesis of Western classical training, Japanese ambient sensibility, and his deep engagement with how electronic and acoustic sound relate — even playing acoustic piano he brings the ear of a musician who has spent decades thinking about timbre and texture at the level of the individual sound wave. The Opus concert as a document is precious because it presents Sakamoto without any technical mediation between artist and listener — just the man, the instrument, and the music that had accumulated in him over seven decades.
