"Estou Além" — I am beyond — positions António Variações in the mystical register that coexisted with his more playful work, the metaphysical alongside the ribald. Variações was Portugal's first genuine rock star and a queer icon who died of AIDS-related illness in 1984 at forty; he lived and made music with the intensity of someone aware that existence was not guaranteed. The production of "Estou Além" is characteristically Portuguese-80s — synthesizers and electric guitars in conversation with folk melodic sensibility, the production choices now sounding simultaneously dated and prescient. His voice is among the strangest and most compelling in Portuguese popular music: a falsetto capable of great tenderness, a lower register with unexpected weight, the constant sense of a voice that had decided not to follow any available model.
