Mal Feito

"Mal Feito" (Done Wrong, or Badly Done) finds Xand Avião in the forró tradition of examining love's failures with the detailed attention of a forensic accountant. The production is band forró at its most confident — tight, layered, propulsive, with the zabumba and triangle locked in their ancient call-and-response while electric guitar handles the melody's upper register. His voice has the toughness of someone who has given himself fully to the genre for decades and emerged with an instrument that can carry both the brightness of celebration and the weight of reckoning. The lyric investigates what was done wrong in a relationship without assigning blame neatly, a more sophisticated approach than the genre sometimes takes. There's maturity here — the recognition that bad endings often come from bad beginnings, from choices made poorly by both parties, from the ordinary failures of people trying to love well and not quite managing it. Xand performs this without self-pity, which is the forró masculine code: you feel it completely, you name it precisely, and you keep moving. "Mal Feito" is the soundtrack for looking back clearly.
