An elongated study in institutional dread, "Waiting for the Engineers" translates bureaucratic paralysis into sound. The piece suspends itself in a narrow harmonic band — not quite dissonance, not quite consonance — as though the tonal system itself is caught in committee deliberation, waiting for authorization to resolve. Guðnadóttir uses extended cello techniques including col legno and sul ponticello to generate textures that suggest machinery idling, cooling systems cycling, the specific sound of a building holding its breath. There is rhythm here, but irregular: something closer to a pulse being monitored than a beat being kept. The emotional landscape is one of institutional time — the hours inside waiting rooms and control centers where the weight of decision hangs but decisions do not come. The piece does not resolve because the engineers in the historical context arrived too late for resolution to mean anything. Guðnadóttir's score consistently refuses the listener any comfortable narrative arc, and this piece is among the most rigorous examples of that refusal. Best heard at volume, in a space large enough for the low harmonics to move.
