Interpretation

Shiro Sagisu strips away Yoko Takahashi's voice and lets the orchestra carry the full weight of what Neon Genesis Evangelion actually is — a story about broken people trying to save a world that keeps breaking them. The strings sweep in massive, almost overwrought waves, the brass punching through with the kind of grandeur that feels both triumphant and slightly absurd, which is precisely the point. Where the original television version channels cheery J-pop energy as a mask over existential dread, this arrangement removes the mask entirely. The melody that felt infectious now feels enormous, even mournful — the iconic ascending intervals transformed into something closer to a requiem for teenage heroism. Sagisu's orchestration draws on his decades scoring the series itself, so the harmonic language is internally consistent with the Evangelion sound world: sweeping romanticism colliding with dissonance, hope and horror sharing the same chord. It works best heard in a dark room at high volume, the kind of listening that makes you feel seventeen and devastated in equal measure. There's a latent grandiosity here that the original format always hinted at but couldn't fully inhabit, and the orchestral version finally gives the thesis its proper, terrifying space.
