Lady Gaga
Gaga's version of "(They Long to Be) Close to You," also from the Joker: Folie à Deux soundtrack, is an act of radical subtraction. The Burt Bacharach and Hal David song has existed in countless arrangements since its composition, most famously the Carpenters' lush 1970 recording with its swooning strings and Karen Carpenter's porcelain alto. Gaga strips nearly everything away — minimal piano, minimal production, space treated as an instrument in itself. What remains is the vocal, and she deploys it with a fragility that sounds earned rather than performed, her voice slightly roughed at the edges, not reaching for the big notes but finding them anyway through sheer honesty. The lyric is one of popular music's great exercises in romantic longing, the image of birds and stars mysteriously compelled toward someone describing love as a kind of gravitational inevitability.
