Fred Again..'s "Arranbee" operates in the fertile space between UK dance music and diasporic soul, pulling together two artists whose work is defined by emotional honesty rendered through unconventional means. The production follows Fred's characteristic method: found vocal fragments, filtered textures, and percussion that sits slightly off the quantization grid to suggest human fallibility. Beneath Obongjayar's voice, sub-bass pulses with restraint, and synth pads rise and dissolve like weather systems. Obongjayar — British-Nigerian, indebted to Fela Kuti's Afrobeat defiance as much as to R&B melisma — delivers melody and spoken word with a quality that sounds simultaneously ancient and current. The title references the genre of R&B itself, an acknowledgment of lineage and appropriation and evolution all at once.
