Hands Up

A percussive, politically charged track where Hynes channels frustration through a funkier, more direct production approach than usual. The rhythm is prominent and insistent, guitar work rhythmic as much as melodic, creating a groove that functions as both pleasure and argument. "Hands Up" exists at the intersection of personal and political that defines much of "Freetown Sound," engaging with the ongoing reality of anti-Black violence without reducing the album to polemic. The production still finds warmth even in anger, which is both musically sophisticated and emotionally honest — joy and grief aren't opposites but simultaneous realities for many Black listeners. Hynes' voice here carries urgency without losing the textural sensitivity that distinguishes his production. There's solidarity coded into the arrangement, the sense of music made not just for individual consumption but for collective processing. A track that demands to be understood in context while still functioning as excellent music in isolation.
