Remi Wolf's "Kangaroo" is maximalist funk-pop that behaves like a sugar crash — bright, jittery, and structurally unwilling to sit still. The production is stacked with candy-colored detail: slapping bass, chopped guitar stabs, cartoonish synth blurts, hand-percussion and vocal chops that ricochet across the stereo field. Nothing stays in place for eight bars. Wolf's voice is the engine, a big elastic instrument that swerves from raspy belt to nasal squeak to sudden falsetto within a single line, and she sings with the unbothered confidence of someone who thinks polish is boring. Her lyrics work by free-association rather than narrative — absurd imagery, non sequiturs, sudden bursts of real feeling wedged between jokes — so the emotional landscape is manic joy with anxiety wired directly beneath it. That's her whole project: bedroom-pop earnestness routed through hyperactive early-2000s funk-pop production, part of the wave of post-pandemic artists who made brightness feel unhinged rather than reassuring. It's music for getting ready with the lights on and the volume irresponsible, for the fifteen minutes when you decide the day is going to be fun. Play it once and the hook lodges sideways; the details keep revealing themselves for weeks.
