"Pop Star" is Fike's most explicitly self-referential piece—a song about the strangeness of becoming the thing you longed to be, written from the inside of that experience without the benefit of distance. The production is bright, immediate, commercially polished in a way that makes the lyrical self-questioning land harder: the form comments on its content. He inhabits the pop star role with full commitment while simultaneously examining it, the way an actor might play a character who is also watching themselves perform. His voice here is more confident than confessional, but the confidence has a performed quality the song seems fully aware of. Growing up in Fort Myers, music was the imaginable escape route—wealth, recognition, departure from precarity—and "Pop Star" documents the arrival at that escape route and the discovery that it doesn't entirely resemble what was imagined. The hook is effortlessly catchy, which is its own metacommentary. It's a song about the gap between the fantasy and the reality of success, told without bitterness but with clear eyes.
