Highlight Reel
Julien Baker
Highlight Reel is Baker turning a contemporary cultural metaphor — the curated self-presentation of social media, the best moments strung together into a deceptive completeness — toward personal reckoning. The production is one of her more expansive arrangements, with some electric texture that gives the song more body than her purely acoustic work. Her vocal performance moves through the song with awareness of performance itself: she knows she's singing, she knows you're listening, and the song is partly about what that implicates. The lyrics examine the gap between the version of herself she presents and whatever actually lives underneath, the exhausting work of maintenance. There's cultural specificity here about the millennial/Gen-Z condition of performing identity through digital curation, but Baker doesn't moralize — she's as implicated as anyone. The self-examination is honest without being punishing. Best heard when you've just posted something and then sat with the discomfort of having done it.
